Book #3: The Making of a Chef & Book #4: CRUSH IT
The Making of a Chef, by dreamboat/hottie Michael Ruhlman is one of those books I always wanted to read back when I was doing professional food writing. His blog is tremendous, effortlessly readable, and I think in many ways this book helped kickstart the culinary memoir genre that’s so ubiquitous today (think Orangette, Waiter Rant, etc).
At times, I found him frustrating. He set out to...

Book #2: Without a Net
Oh, what a privileged life I lead. This is how I felt after finishing Without a Net: The Female Experience of Growing Up Working Class, a book of essays my friend Adelle lent to me.

A new endeavor
My friend (and former boss) Athena tipped me off to this blog post by Julien Smith; it’s about how he triumphantly read 52 books in 52 weeks and how:
It feels awesome. It gives you an amazing amount of ideas. It helps you think more thoroughly. It’s better than TV and even the internet. It makes you understand the world more. It is a building block towards a habit of completion. Did I...
Day 2 of no drinking + workout + no computer or tv before bed. Another night of good sleep! These experts really may be on to something…
Turns out all that advice I always read about how to get a better night’s sleep may be worth something. Yesterday I:
1. Went on a bike ride and long walk
2. Didn’t drink any alcohol and stopped drinking coffee at 2.
3. Didn’t have a computer open or TV on for the hour before I went to sleep.
The result? Slept like a baby.
