Workmate.
Let’s say you had the opportunity to have someone helping you out with your job. Let’s say you have two potential hires (no other options) and you have to hire one of them.
Would you rather hire someone who was:
- exceptionally talented but completely lacking in common sense or intuition to the point where you are hitting your own head thinking, “WHAT?” (also assume “common sense and intuition” are very valuable traits for this particular job, as is innate talent)
- just okay at his or her tasks but possessing fabulous intuition and people-skills
Who would you choose?
N.B. : I am not hiring anyone nor do I have two candidates, but this is just something I’ve been thinking about.
Find out how they are at learning and progressing. Whichever one you can coach, hire.
You can teach someone how to do something. You cannot, however, teach them not to be an asshole.
