Books update

I’ve been so very bad about updating my tumblr with what I’m reading. One, because I’ve certainly fallen off the one book/one week program and two, because I’ve sort of been talking a good deal about what I’ve been reading with various friends and colleagues and when it came time to write about it, it sort of didn’t feel like there there was much more to say.

On an unrelated note, my reading has become quite high tech. I’m now the proud owner of a kindle! I assumed I wouldn’t like it, and that it would feel weird and electronic, but it’s nothing like that. It’s totally natural feeling, and once you settle in, the device gets out of the way and leaves you with the digital words on the page. If I thought I wouldn’t like it, why would I have one? An excellent question.

Dan heard me complain one or eight too many times about hating the books I was reading. Seriously, have you read Mennonite in Little Black Dress? Atrocious. I got a third of the way through, put my hands up in disgust and then pouted over it. So he bought me a kindle and I love it.

On to content: I’ve noticed I’ve been reading books about small people, and their small lives, and the subtle injustices and indignities and let-downs that they suffer. Two that come to mind: The Imperfectionists and Freedom. Quality of writing aside, both books have left me feeling a little … spent. So I ask: Are there funny or not-so-heavy books that are absent pink spines, aren’t written by anyone with the last name Sedaris, and aren’t non-fiction? If so, please let me know!
